GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS

5/15/2008

Dear Neighbors,

I would like to thank you all for your support over the years and for the enthusiasm you greeted my recently withdrawn candidacy. Unfortunately, for personal reasons, I could not commit to a position on the Massapequa School Board of Education. Much of your support was based on the understanding of how much we as a community have accomplished over the last several years and your respect for my efforts toward those ends. What many people do not realize of course is that the guiding force in our partnership with the Town of Oyster Bay and the ‘brains’ behind these efforts was Gary Slavin.
I cannot express just how important this election is for our community. The standard campaign promises are already out there, but only Gary has a plan to get your Fair Share in Albany. Our problems won’t be solved with rhetoric or empty promises. Don’t be fooled by the slogans; none of the other candidates can really bring about change and some have no intention of it.
Believe me when I tell you that this is the most important election of the year for our community and voting for Gary is the single most important thing you can do to benefit us all this year.

Thanks again,
John Lynott

EXPERIENCE THAT COUNTS…WHAT EXPERIENCE?!?

EXPERIENCE THAT COUNTS…WHAT EXPERIENCE?!?

That’s the latest campaign slogan to come along. Not Bad, but it should be scrutinized by all for the truthfulness of the statement. It’s certainly true about Gary and John, but is it true about Jane Ryan? What accomplishments can she cite? We have heard none. This is reason #1 to not vote for this candidate.

Look even closer at the latest candidate. She is endorsed by State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno. The same Joseph Bruno under whose control Long Island became the cash cow for the rest of the state? Seeking his endorsement defies logic. This is reason #2 to not vote for this candidate.

There are better candidates. This is reason #3 to not vote for this candidate.

VOTE FOR THE SLAVIN-LYNOTT TICKET ON MAY 20TH AND LET’S GET OUR FAIR SHARE.

The standard for Board of Education candidacy: Make a bold statement of change, get elected, and change nothing.

Look at last year’s election. The candidates who did not declare that they would ‘fix’ the budget lost. Those that did won…but what did they change?

That’s the problem; these people can’t change anything, because they don’t know how.

Nice Slogan

DO WELL WITH DOWELL

Leslie Dowell has thrown her hat in the ring for the school board. Good for her.

Unfortunately this is not good for us.

Leslie Dowell's participation in the community cannot be challenged. She has always lent her name to community organizations in Massapequa.

So what?

Lending your name is the easy part. Standing behind innovative leaders is something most of us have done at some point in our lives. How does that make you a viable school board candidate?

It doesn't.

Attending school board meetings can be trying. The bureaucracy that has become our school board would test the patience of Job. We invite Leslie to show us how that time benefited Massapequa just once. Did she demand accountability when the superintendent was let go? Did she demand that our students be allowed to attend the national competition for the regional robotics contest they won this year?

John Lynott and Gary Slavin DID demand accountability. Gary & John demanded that the innovative young minds of our town be allowed to test themselves in Atlanta against other serious science students. They not only went to the school for this, they went to Albany...AND GOT IT DONE!

Leslie says: "Petitioning our legislator's and New York State for our FAIR SHARE of state aid, is nothing new. PTA has been lobbying this very issue for years, including sponsoring legislative forums and discussions, and been successful in helping our local legislators to acquire additional school funding."

She was part of the PTA when these efforts were made, but they ultimately failed. Isn't it time for someone else to try?

Has anyone with a real track record ever tried?

It's time.

Another School Board Debacle

Please see the below memo. After having removed a superintendant with significant time remaining on her deal, they replace her for a five year term with an insider. This board has a tendency to make extreme changes right before elections. This has got to stop.

RE: APPOINTMENT – SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
It is with great pleasure that the Board of Education makes the following announcement to our staff and community.
As you know, Mr. Charles Sulc has been our Acting Superintendent of Schools since June 20th of last year. The Board is pleased with his stewardship in the best interests of our students, staff, and community. His expertise and human relations skill, along with his absolute professionalism at all times, is the model of effective leadership. We are fortunate that we have had nearly one year to get to watch and work with Mr. Sulc, and we are convinced – unanimously– that this appointment is absolutely in the best interests of our district.
With this in mind, the Board is pleased to announce that it expects to appoint Mr. Sulc as our next Superintendent of Schools at our meeting on April 3rd. We ask that you join with us in congratulating Mr. Sulc in advance of this special appointment.
The official appointment and contract start date of Mr. Sulc as Superintendent of Schools will be effective September 12th. Until that time he will continue in his role as Acting Superintendent of Schools.
As a 38-year veteran of Massapequa who has served for the past 17 years as Assistant Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, and Acting Superintendent, we know Charlie – and he knows us. We look forward to the official appointment on April 3rd.

Typical...

Now that Gary and John have put forth their agenda to fix what's wrong with the schools, the district sent out a letter that claims they have been working on the same thing. If they had the ability to do this, they would have done so already. DON'T BUY IT! This is just another example of the bureacracy that stops real change from happening. The letter is copied below:

During the last two months, you have probably read or heard in the media the details associated with a proposed budget for New York State. The fact is that Long Island, and Massapequa in particular, have once again become vulnerable to proposed losses in state aid. For your information, during the last 3 - 4 weeks, we have actively engaged in a variety of activities that were designed to assist our State legislators in supporting a higher level of state aid in Massapequa. As an outgrowth of these activities, we are once again asking you to assist us in lobbying for additional state aid.
Attached is a letter that we are asking you to read, sign and send to the Governor’s office. The next few weeks are critical as the deadline for a new State budget is April 1st. Therefore, if you choose to assist us in this matter, please mail your copy of this letter no later than Friday, March 21st. Thank you.

The Massapequa School district should focus on education and support the only candidates with a reasonable expectation of success in dealing with Albany. Gary and John will work to GET OUR FAIR SHARE!!!
